The Kiwanis Club of Weston has conferred its annual awards to five distinguished high school students.
The Kiwanis Superintendent’s Scholarship Award went to Casey Sollazzo. This award was created in 2001 in memory of Dr. Janet Shaner and her commitment to education. The award recognizes a student who intends to major in a field of education and/or enjoys working with children. Ms. Sollazzo, a senior at Weston High School, has donated much of her time to working with elementary age students both in Weston and Ridgefield as an afterschool art teacher. She also works throughout the year with Crafts For a Cause, which raises funds for children with special needs. Ms. Sollazzo is interested in pursuing an art education degree at the College of New Jersey.
Clare Murray and Shawnee Sloop received the Kiwanis Community Service Award. Established in 1976, the award recognizes students for their outstanding service and leadership in the community. Ms. Sloop was selected as the student reprsentative to the school’s Strategic Planning Committee and is Captain of the Field Hockey team. Ms. Sloop will attend the University of Delaware next year. Ms. Murray, a junior at Weston High School, is the President and founder of Art With a Heart Club, an organization that helps special needs students make artwork to express their emotions, and is also a member of Key Club.
The recipient of the David Brown Memorial Award was Devon Brostoff. This award is given to a student who has demonstrated the qualities best representative of Mr. Brown’s commitment to the Weston athletic program and spirit of sportsmanship. Ms. Brostoff was a camp counselor at the well-known Sunshine Camp for children who are terminally ill and the VP of Communications for the Temple Shalom Youth Group. She will attend Lehigh University in the fall.
The 2013 Diane Mary Huston Schultz Memorial Award was presented to Olivia Clark. Ms. Clark was selected as the student who best demonstrated the artistic qualities most representative of Ms. Schultz’s love of the arts. She is the Managing Editor of the high school’s literary magazine, Inlook, and has been a staff writer and section editor for WHS Journal. Ms. Clark will attend Williams College in the fall.
The Kiwanis Club of Weston has also conferred its Youth Service Awards. This year’s recipients are Jack Kerns and Claire Bartosic. Mr. Kerns, a junior at Weston High School, was selected for this award based on his work with the Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring program and his dedication to the afterschool WOW program. Ms. Bartosic, a junior at the Hopkins School, was selected for this award based on her work with Norfield Church and the Church’s many outreach programs, such as Midnight Run and the Annual Fair.
